What is pet food really made of?

Your pet is like a cherished and loved member of your family. So like most pet owners, you want the best of food and care for them. That’s why it’s important to see what actually goes into their ready-to-eat food and understand if the ingredients are right for your pet. Read on to understand what pet foods are all about:
Understanding pet food ingredients
The list of ingredients on the pack gives you an indication of what it contains. They come under different categories like meat, vegetable or animal protein (acquired from different sources like cattle, chicken, lambs and others), fat, fiber, total moisture and others. Like Nature’s Variety Instinct rabbit canned food labels say that the food is free of grains, artificial flavors and colors. It contains fruits and vegetables and contains real chicken, beef, lamb, rabbit, duck and Omega fatty acids.
Then you have the ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ foods. Dry foods or “meal” indicates that the ingredients used are not fresh but are “rendered” (it’s a process that dehydrates meat by separating fat, kills bacteria, virus and other organisms). Wet foods are canned or foods that are mixed with additives.
Additives in pet foods
Most pet foods contain chemicals and additives to improve stability, taste, appearance and longer shelf life. Like the Iams dog food label says that it contains optimum levels of Vitamin E, beta-carotene and anti-oxidants for a better immune system. Additives don’t add any nutritive value to the food but prevent water and fat in the food from separating. Color and flavors are added to make the food more attractive. They come with government approved regulations or under the category GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).
