Giving your pet healthy nutritious food is the responsibility of every dog owner. However there are so many dog food brands in the market that most dog parents are quite confused as to which brand they should use. When buying kibble, your pet’s health should be your primary concern.
A particular dog food that one dog thrives on may be totally unsuitable for another. For instance, if you feed the kibble that is meant for a hardworking herding dog to a lazy indoor canine, you’ll find the pet quickly putting on excess weight due to the higher calorie content. Thus the definition of what is healthy for your pet would depend on factors such as its age, activity level and body condition.
The body condition of your pet plays a critical role in choosing dog food for your pet. An overweight pet would need a diet that has comparatively less calories. The reduction could be in the form of reduction in the quantity of dog food fed or switching to kibble that has been made for obese dogs. In contrast a dog that is thin or underweight needs to be fed more often or should be given kibble with higher calorie content.
The nutritional needs of pets in different life stages also vary. A puppy needs food that has a greater nutritional value so as to sustain its growth and development. A senior dog, on the other hand, needs easy to digest food. An adult dog with an ideal body condition would need kibble that helps to maintain its health. Most well-known brands, like Purina dog food, have variants made specifically for each life stage.
Finally remember to check the label of the package to ensure that the kibble consists of a meat protein that is made from human grade meat and not fillers. If you are feeding your pet a vegan diet, choose food that has a high content of plant based proteins.
