Bird Cages Parakeets

Parakeets are the most common pet birds around. They come in a wide variety of colors, are quite intelligent and would make a great pet. Like all pets, parakeets require a lot of responsibility and should be looked after very well. Here are a few things you should know and have if you plan to have a pet parakeet.

Parakeets are quite intelligent and affectionate birds. Like all pets they do require a lot of attention. About 30 minutes a day of talking to it and playing with it would be great. For the times you are not around you would need to get your parakeet a few bird toys. Keeping them active is the best way to keep them out of trouble and a few toys will keep them busy. The bird cages for parakeets need to be quite large as they love to fly a bit. The bigger the cage the better it is for the parakeets. Bird cages that are about 39 in. x 20 in. x 32in in size should do well for a small pair of parakeets. Double bird cages are available which are quite large once they finish growing. Parakeets do not like cold drafts so keeping them away from doors and windows is a good idea. They are also sensitive to smell so it would be better to keep them away from the kitchen. They also require a bit of humidity in the air so during the cold winter months you might need to get yourself a humidifier.

Parakeets are very sensitive birds and require fresh food every day. The water holders in the bird cage must be washed with warm water to avoid the buildup of algae. Coming to the food, there are many brands of bird pellets for parakeets available. They consume about 1 to 2 teaspoons of it every day. In addition to this they should also have a few fruits and vegetables and other fresh food such as mealy worms and bean sprouts. Peanuts and cottage cheese would also be a good snack for your little bird. Avoid giving your parakeet all citrus fruits, cabbage and or dried fruits which are difficult to digest. If your parakeet shows signs of becoming weak, you should feed them with bird vitamin supplements in their water for about 2 to 3 times a week.

Parakeets have a life span of about 15 to 20 years which is quite long. They make ideal bird pet choice for first timers.
